I really hope this blows up in his face. The sociopath really deserves it.

@AngryRobot: While I'm not condoning his actions, what he's doing is really the opposite of sociopathic. He's going through great lengths to save his friend, even though it means hurting another. Is it right? No. But not sociopathic.

@emdanhan: This would be the way a sociopath that doesn't know better likely would try to solve this problem though??? Like, it is literally putting his OWN friend above OTHERS and THEIR friends.

Do I think Atticus actually has ASPD? No. But this isn't some great show of empathy by going this far - it's just his own self-interest as it isn't like DT is in danger or being hurt or being threatened. She just... isn't with him and won't be until he transfers Pokemon over and she might not be happy about this choice. It's more about himself than about DT's wellbeing even if it is a factor.

@MoogleSam: I mean isn't it human nature to put people you know and care about over people you don't? Like yeah it's selfish but I don't think it's sociopathic.

DT didn't look happy being tied up with Thad and we don't know what's happening to her, whether he just stuffed her in the ball and left it at that or if they're using her for something besides blackmail.

@MoogleSam: If Atty were a sociopath, page 23 of this chapter would not have happened. A sociopath wouldn't need any convincing to put their own interests before others.

We really out here discussing philosophy and clinical psychology

I mean it's pretty simple, Atty has always felt aloof and disconnected from society, his whole journey is involuntary, and his "friendship" with George is against his will. The only creature he's had any emotional connection to is in danger. Stealing from a stranger in order to ransom someone you desperately want back is psychologically normal.

Atticus is not sociopathic, he is simply antisocial. He is willing to break the law and hurt people -- within limits -- to get what he wants.

@theseguys If he wanted to save DT and do right in doing so, he could have easily gotten the Jennys involved. Sell out Team Rocket and save DT. Mighta involved jailtime for him, but he chose to join Team Rocket from the getgo.
Throwing people under the bus to get what you want isn't "normal." It's pretty fucked up. Atticus is trying to get what he wants without taking any responsibility for what he's done. Remember DT couldn't have gotten kidnapped if he kept her in a pokeball in the first place (for her own damn safety.) Or, ya know, maybe don't join the friggin' mafia?!
This situation is a culmination of all his own choices, and he's exploiting George's naive trust. If you guys think its totally justified to do that just because he doesn't like her, that's unsettling.
A similar situation would be someone facing eviction if they don't earn some money to pay rent. Their annoying nieghbor stops them from breaking into a car to take the radio, then offers their place for the guy to stay for the night, saying they'll figure out a solution. So during the night, the guy robs his neighbor blind, then leaves.
I realize eviction is not quite the same as his pet's life, but its the same level of justification.
He knows what he's doing is both illegal and wrong, and that it'll hurt someone. He's never empathized with anyone, joined a criminal organization, and frequently does things with no concern for how it affects anyone but himself. I think back to the charred corpses of everything in the viridian forest, which he casually walked away from. Dude's a bloody sociopath.

@AngryRobot: i don't think it's right to use that word: 'sociopath' so loosely, it's a pretty serious mental disorder that people suffer from

@Guest: so·ci·o·path
/ˈsōsēōˌpaTH/

noun
a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.

He has the anti-social attitudes and behavior, and his actions demonstrate a clear lack of conscience. I think back to even when he left that scientist in the clutches of rocket. He didn't seem at all concerned for that guys wellbeing, and even ended up siding with them.
The forest, and all its bodies. Stealing from bill. Attempting to rob the club. What he's done to george. I'm sure there's more.
It goes beyond a simple "he does bad things" and "he's antisocial." He never shows any concern, or heck, acknowledgement of guilt for the things he does. It doesn't even seem to cross his mind. And he only put the clubs mons back due to having his arm twisted.
The pain and emotional anguish of others doesn't seem to concern him.
His only concerns are "does this bother me?" And "does this benefit me."
If it ain't sociopathy, there's still some real screws loose in that guy.

@AngryRobot: Atty's not a sociopath. He's a teenager. Doing things that are illegal, stupid or harmful to others is pretty standard for teens. Not taking responsibility for their actions is also pretty standard for teens. I know at least half the kids at my high school had done plenty of things just as bad as Atty, or worse. And almost every member of the student body had broken rules, argued with authority figures, and broken some minor laws (trespassing, drinking, minor property damage, etc.) They'll admit it to their friends and brag but the moment anybody in a position of authority asks at best they'll deny it completely and at worst they'll blame somebody else so they can avoid getting in trouble.
People shouldn't throw around words like "sociopath" and "psychopath" so liberally. They're serious mental illnesses that people suffer from. Movies, television and other media don't help with that either, painting a picture of the absolute worst case scenarios and stereotyping psychopaths and sociopaths as serial killers and monsters. Just because a person has sociopathy or psychopathy doesn't automatically make them Ted Bundy. It's wrong to make those assumptions and it's wrong to call somebody a sociopath or psychopath just because they don't behave in a way you want them to.

@The Peaceful Is Willing To: Well Team Rocket's stated goal in games has always been to steal all the world's pokemon, and George was certainly trying to catch them all...

I'm hoping he's actually just borrowing the Pokemon to sic on Thad, rather than stealing them. (But then there's the question of...why not just ask George, then. Sigh)

I mean, to be fair, with the way George hoards pokemon and barely sticks to any of them before ditching them for the next one that happens to cross her path (or so it certainly feels like) I really don't feel that bad about Atty stealing some.
What are the odds she even remembers them past how 'X amount' were taken? George talks up friendship and all that, but she barely keeps to one team long enough for any of her mons to even BEGIN to give a crap about her.

That said; super excited to see where this goes~

The fact that Atty seems at peace here means I don't think he's just going to rob George and give them to Thad. He has some sort of plan involved.

Based on the last page before this one, and the position of his fingers on the last 3 panels; using the QWERTY format keyboard, I believe he typed in "F" "R" "I" . So, George's password may very well be "FRIENDS" or "FRIENDSHIP", something of that sort

it's almost like... his frontal cortex isn't... fully developed yet >:O

Ya'll treat him like he's 25, it's the lack of sleep and bad smoking habits. But as I recall, this journey started out with him at like 14 ish. :/

OOOOOH, I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING FUNNY. WHAT IF HE ENDS UP USING THE CLONING GLITCH BY ACCIDENT LOL. YOU KNOW, THAT THING WHERE YOU TURN THE GAME OFF HALFWAY BEFORE THE GAME SAVES AND END UP WITH A SECOND POKEMON IDENTICAL TO THE FIRST? (I MEAN, I'M PRETTY SURE THAT CLONING WAS STILL POSSIBLE IN G/S/C IN THE SAME WAY IT WAS IN R/B/Y.)
