How DO you hurt a rock? Break its heart, maybe...

Hard to say whether or not he only wants to use Dragonthing out of loyalty of laziness. I must say, I was, and still am, like this myself. I tend to put using my favourite characters and such in a game before whatever lends to the best tactics.

See y'all soon.

First!? You can also hurt a rock with paper.
September 17th, 2012, 5:12 pm
Awwww he's commited to Dragonthing.

The real reason is probably much more cruel.

Ps: George's silhouet looks somewhat like a hooded guy with a huge square nose and a long moustache. :3

Well, first you teach it metal claw, then see where it goes from there Atty. Or a hammer.... a hammer works just nice for smashing in faces.

Hay What about Hay what about Rat?

He needs training to. :(

Dragonthing can totally do it! My Charmander was able to once it was strong enough. *was too lazy to pick up some bugs and train them when you can just scorch the forest*

Um, bad idea George Butterfree takes a four times weakness to Rock while Onix takes half damage from Flying and base damage from Bug...

pidgey i just used pidgey and sand attack like 7 times until onix couldnt hit me. dragon thing doesnt have to hurt it much, just not die
September 17th, 2012, 5:35 pm
Oh god. He's catching the Ash mentality. He's dead. Unless you get a Charmeleon. Then you can wreck his team.
September 17th, 2012, 5:49 pm
@melvin2898: Caught that, did you? ;)

Metal claw alwaays worked for me. If not, evolving DT into a Charmeleon will work as well.
Kamashari (Guest)
September 17th, 2012, 5:55 pm
Hey, he doesn't NEED to evolve Dragonthing, just level him up to 16 - oh wait, that MIGHT evolve him... Neh.

No less, normal charmanders learn Dragon Rage at 16 which could potentially wreck an onix. Or possibly things like Metal Claw, Dig(?), Dragon Claw, Dragon rush, Dragon pulse, Outrage, Seismic Toss, Rock smash, Counter, Focus punch, Fury cutter...

*Kamashari rambles on here like the nerd he is, but for the sake of brevity and easiness, posted below is a tl;dr version.*

Charmanders can learn a variety of kick-arse moves, may have high EV's and IV's, could be specially bred, and may just plain have some really odd condition which may or may not be caused by a specific type of microorganism that allows a pokemon with them to grow at exponential levels until the microorganisms die off...

Okay a few things 1 - LoL at GSGoat.

2 @Akuto - butterfree was my ONLY option playing the first gen, Confusion almost always downed onix in 2 hits. You're right about the type match-ups, but I never had an issue with that somehow...
Caio (Guest)
September 17th, 2012, 6:31 pm
@Akuto: Buterfree learns confusion. Which is a psychic move. Which means it's a special move. And since most rock pokemon have terrible Special Defense, they tend to take heavy damage from special moves.

Of course, if the first Consufion doesn't take Onix down, he pwns Butefree. So I don't think is that much of a good idea...

The best strategy would be to catch a Mankey on that route where Atty won his battle against Khan, but Atty would have to walk all the way back from Pewter.

I honestly don't know what the author is planning.

...Butterfree? George, really now, that's a terrible idea. You really ought to not tell Atty to bring in a Pokemon that would have a nice x4 weakness to whatever he's fighting. XP

@FormOf_SomeGuy: 'Cuz in 1st Gen Onyx didn't have any Rock-Type attacks. Brock's thing was Bide, it's what his Onyx would use half the time and he gave it to you after the battle.

A lot of people here obviously only know Kanto through the 3rd Gen remakes, Holy has stated multiple times that the comic is based off of 1st Gen and therefore Dragonthing is not going to get Metal Claw. (Yes, yes, the Butterfrees had Sweet Scent, wasn't introduced til 2nd Gen, yeah, yeah, yeah. Really, it was only logical for them to have Sweet Scent anyways)

Anyways, excellent comic, as always, Holy. Looking forward to whatever nonconventional, obvious-in-hindsight solution Atty stumbles into.
September 17th, 2012, 9:30 pm
Metal claw? Not likely, since H0ly stated over and over it was based on RBY game-mechanics.

....all I can think of in that second-last panel is Galaxy Quest. c:
I also really like how that panel is done.
September 17th, 2012, 9:31 pm
I dont think metal claw would work out. I think H0ly is writing from the very first versian, which is red and blue. Back then (i dont THINK) metalclaw didn't exist on the leveling up moves list.

@EeVeE: Genius xD Can't believe I didn't come up with that before. Loved that movie.

Also I think we should be able to get a glimpse of DT's head in panel 1... But maybe that's just me wanting more DT that isn't zoomed out into dot eyes :P

Yeah, Atty, Super Starter gogo.

That's how I played pokemon until recently, explore EVERYWHERE, fight EVERYONE, and ONLY use your starter. Then your starter's always around twice the level of your opponent's pokemon. And when that happens, 1 hit KO's and screw types.
September 17th, 2012, 10:31 pm
you can melt a rock.. just train DT until he becomes a Charizard, then blast away.
September 17th, 2012, 10:32 pm
@Catfeather: I caught that too!

So probably Attys favorite way to.

September 17th, 2012, 11:43 pm
Well.. the first step to go and gain experience is to hunt and defeant a lot of pokemon so DT can evolve... learn metal claw and have a slightest chance of defeating the onix...

This is somewhat irrelevant but I freaking LOVE the art on this page!

Also, Butterfree was (and is) how I always beat Brock in Pokemon Red. There really aren't many other options. Confusion is one of the few attacks you can use at the beginning that isn't Normal or Flying type.
darkgloomie (Guest)
September 18th, 2012, 1:16 am
This can only end up one way...

'cept Atty would probably kick DT out of it because after it DT would be too big to comfortably use as lighter...
September 18th, 2012, 2:13 am
He could also use a nidoran, they learn double kick at lvl 11, or a Mankey, they learn low kick at lvl 9. He could also trade away the pikachu for a water type, or something the like. Ah, the good old days of Pokemon yellow:training your pikachu and maybe a pidgey only to get smashed by Brock. And again, and again, training some more, and again.
September 18th, 2012, 2:23 am
Heyyy I have a jigglypuff just like that on my bed next to me! ... Except it's not real... and it's smiling forever... and it's flat cuz I use it as a backrest...

I just used ember. Even at half-damage special attacks work. (3-5 turns; pre-charmilion; higher level than the geodude)
Also Brock loves slow tactics like stat buffs and bide.
September 18th, 2012, 4:10 am
I'd love for Atty to ask how grass moves hurt a rock and George to try and explain razor leaf. "Well the plant pokemon creates leaves from somewhere and fires them at the rock pokemon somehow. Also the leaves are ridgid for some reason. Then, because plants erode rocks eventually, the leaves hurt it a lot instead of bouncing off. Even if it's an onix that survives several tons of force every time it hits something."

September 18th, 2012, 12:15 pm
My team was always Charmander, Spearrow, and Pikachu at the beginning. I always put effort into getting a spearow since seeing the first eppisode of pokemon. Seeing a bunch of them beat the shit out of Ash and Pikachu made me love them. My last pokemon was the Magicarp the guy sold. It was hard to tring but Gyradose was wonderfull in first gen.

"I just want to use Dragonthing."

Meanwhile, Pikachu's nature has changed to "Depressed!"

And that gaddamn Jigglypuff is freaking me out.
September 18th, 2012, 6:28 pm
Metal claw that bitch!
September 18th, 2012, 7:13 pm
you dont plan on having a six-team of the weakest, poorly raised pokemon for him?

To defeat a rock.... do nothing!

That's right nothing! A rock that sits there gathers moss, and moss is a form of grass, and as rocks are weak against grass types and their moves, just leave the rock be and it will be destroyed by moss!

September 18th, 2012, 11:20 pm
@The_mad_one: lol. u made me have to stare at it til i saw it
September 18th, 2012, 11:40 pm
dt used fire grenade and blinds the onyx (atty's ligther thown in onxy's eyes and fire atack on attys ligther)then the fire is put out with water ko ing onyx

September 19th, 2012, 12:56 am
Uh... @Akuto: Butterfree learns confusion and is much faster than Onix. Onix is hilariously allergic to special attacks like confusion. End result is that you can one-shot Brock's Onix with a decent Butterfree.
Red (Guest)
September 19th, 2012, 5:23 am
THERE IS NO METAL CLAW Many have said it already, but for the love of 151 pokemon, Charmander does not - should not - learn metal claw! That was an addition in the 3rd generation that was, quite frankly, a pathetic effort to reduce the challenge of choosing the fire starter.

Hopefully Holy *will* keep the standards of the original game, and leave Dragonthing wiffing innefectually at rocks with claws and fire. You can beat Brock with those, anyway, if you're cunning. And persistent. And lucky enough to score a burn. :P

Oh god, my eyes! I'm b. . . better? Someone really SHOULD use a potion on Atticus's eye. Bonus points if they mace him when he's not expecting it.
September 19th, 2012, 10:47 am
melt the arena into molten slag and drown onyx
September 19th, 2012, 11:25 am
haha, i had the same mentality as Atty when I was younger, except I played yellow version and killed both a geodude and onyx with a level 20 pikachu. because I didn't like to level up anything else until I got the exp share.
September 19th, 2012, 2:17 pm
Well... Butterfree learns confuse which is awesome at the start of the game and works nicely on rock pokemon. That's how I always started the game :)

@Akuto: actually, onix takes half damage from bug. it's a rock type.
September 20th, 2012, 3:34 am
hmmm you'd think now that he's getting serious about dragonthing he'd give him a proper name...
Mr. Guest (Guest)
September 20th, 2012, 9:33 am
I used Pidgey and Rattata to beat Brock. Just kept using Sand Attack and Growl to make Onix weak and then killed him with a long battle of Charmander's ember.
Akuto (Guest)
September 20th, 2012, 8:57 pm
@taco: Actually, Onix is both Rock and Ground, Ground being weak to Bug. But since Bug is weak to Rock, it balances out as base damage. That's okay though, a lot of people don't remember that.

Interestingly enough, it was remarked in the series that Pikachu would be ineffective because Onix is Rock type, but actually it's the Ground type he should have really been worried about (since Ground negates Electricity). It was a writing error in the show
September 20th, 2012, 9:20 pm
Atty not only has the most considerate smoke in the world, but the most opaque.
September 21st, 2012, 9:54 pm
Poor rat. "I only want Dragonthing"... YOUR PIKACHU IS RIGHT THERE!
September 22nd, 2012, 1:01 am
Haha! Reminds me of when I first played Pokemon in elementary school and didn't know what I was doing. I was all like "fuck those ugly bug pokemon" and only ever used my Charmander to fight anything, ever. All the other Pokemon I caught were just filler for if he ever fainted so I could revive him and put him out again.

It was a long hard road but dang if my Charizard wasn't level 90 by the time I went to fight the Elite Four.
