The pokémon storage system sounds completely immoral now.

Kumotogi-san @The_mad_one: but that makes it more realistic tho~

I DID read everything he said. Pity I couldn't read what George said as people got in front of the text.-.

The pokemons are all dead Basically, their personality and phisical stats are saved, and then the original ones gets killed, or recycled, turned into energy, etc.

Later when the trainer needs them, and new Pokemon gets created using the data in the system, the personality of the pokemon gets restored, and the data in the system is deleted.

Ash's pickachu does it damn well not to go into his pokeball, ever. He doesn't want to die just yet...
October 6th, 2014, 9:54 pm
So is everyone on Star Trek @Evan Dark: Exactly, pokémon are basically scanned, disintegrated & then all the data about them is stored on a drive. When the pokémon is called out, an identical pokémon with the same memories is assembled from nearby particles... which is exactly what teleporters do on Star Trek.

I'll leave it up to you whether a Captain Picard & Pikachu have souls once they've been transported/released. :'3

Although thinking about it... if pokémon go to heaven, could there be millions of near identical Pikachus?
October 6th, 2014, 11:04 pm
@Dante_Solablood: Weeel...conversion of matter to energy you know, it doesn't matter about the body, so long as it assembles correctly. And so far as a soul, what are those going to be made out of but energy in the first place? And energy should have no issue being expressed as 101010101010 etc to describe waves and such in a database.
October 6th, 2014, 11:13 pm
@NaginiFay: Of course you're assuming that the matter is turned into energy instead of being dispursed & fresh matter used to create the new subject.

As for the soul, if it's a definable energy which can be stored in binary... then that leads to other issues such as the ability to rollback your soul to an earlier restore point should you commit crimes which could cause eternal damage. I like this world. :3
October 7th, 2014, 4:34 am
@Evan Dark: Just as dead as every member of the Enterprise Crew
October 8th, 2014, 10:25 am
@Evan Dark: Except for one thing. Ash received his Pikachu in the form of a Pokeball and it has been in there more than once since being with him. Though Pikachu's typical F that Shit attitude is quite understandable.

digitize me! further proof that pokemon were the first digital pocket monsters

and the digimon are the rejects of pokemon society :O

October 7th, 2014, 1:28 pm
A whole can of worms @Wyld: Actually Digimon where created first, Pokemon just imported to the USA sooner.

As for the comic itself. Wow. Just.. wow. The whole concept of digitized living breathing beings being as susceptible to change as easily as normal computer data... the thought sorta accursed to me before but no one has quite put my vague suspensions to such coherent, concrete nightmare-fuel before. Half of me wants to run screaming, and the other half of me want to find and strangle Bill for inventing something that allows some one to play god, let alone distributing it on such a large scale.

One does wonder though, with such power to create, mod, and dup life, why team rocket doesn't just rent a couple of servers and higher some programers for their Pokemon research department. It would mak their "rare" Pokemon a lot less rare for starters.

That's weird, its only 2:30 pm where i am at...

@Ace 229: Pokémon came out a year before Digimon in Japan. The Tamagotchi, which were the more effeminate precursors to Digimon, did come out first though.

In other news, now I'll be more worried about my shiny Alakazam turning into a Bellsprout.

Fuck this war! @SillyRabit:
You know what? I just thought of something. Fuck this Digimon/Pokemon war. I grew up on both, I love both. Digimon came first? So what? Pokemon came first? Who gives a shit? Point is, they were both amazing and big parts of our childhood. We're all adults or at least older and more mature than back in those days. Surely we can put this war behind us and admit, they were both brilliant!

I like the idea of hackers stealing Pokemon, you'd think the Rockets would focus on getting hackers to work for them instead of the oh so useful grunts they have
varsaigen (Guest)
October 7th, 2014, 1:22 am
@AfterTheMoment: Thing is, they DID try a hacking scheme in the series. Gen IV I believe. Unfortunately, they were materializing the pokeballs in a nearby facility instead of sending the data back to Rocket HQ....

And the fun never ends. @ThePokeman92: How do you know what I'm thinking? Are you saying you're a mind-reader? Can you tell me what I'm thinking now? I was thinking pizza, how do you feel about that? Pizza sounds good, I'm gonna order some. Do you want some? Should I send it to this address? What do you like on your pizza? Don't tell me you like anchovies. Speaking of fish, how do you like living near the ocean? Have you ever been on a boat? How did you get to Johto? Did you use one of your Pokémon, or did you take a boat? I've always wanted to be on a boat. Do you get seasick? I like sailors, have you ever talked to one? What are you doing on your computer right now? Can I see your collection?
October 7th, 2014, 4:47 am
The mouse over caption says "No, you don't have to read all of that"... I DID read all of that... I also understood exactly what he was saying and the technical standpoints of it all... Is that sad? XD

@EmilyAnnCoons: Lol, I wouldn't say understanding all of that is sad... remember that HOly had to write it to begin with. :P

Sooooo... I think they never really explained Pokemon storage system in detail, and especially not in the way of "data" because it opens a whole can of worms...
Essentially, what he's saying is that a crazy guy could easily duplicate himself ad-infinitum and create an army of evilnesses. Likewise, it also brings the whole transhuman question into play (eg Eclipse Phase; what is human? what is AI? What is sentience? etc). Thaaaannnnkkkkksssssssssssss aaaaaaaa llllllooooootttttttt H0lyhandgrenade.

Pokemon is unscientific anyway @Ace 229:
I guess it's a cool idea to keep your pets on a USB rather than in the phisical world, until you think deeply about what does that mean for the poor animal. The Pokemon games obviously didn't think about it that deep.

But Bill having to "invent" a storage system for pokemons suggest that Pokemon "data" is no ordinary data (0s and 1s), but something different, possibly inmutable, or too complex to modify without corrupting it.

Otherwise, you could just store them in a .zip file, or use an ordinary relational database, if you want to be fancy.

That makes a lot of sense, and I did read everything. Actually, it's reasons like this that I refuse to store my Pokemon on the new internet storage, Pokemon Bank, instead of in the games themselves.
October 7th, 2014, 4:32 pm
So.. Pokemon are technically electronically cloned upon being placed in a pokeball. Hell all Team Rocket had to do was get Ash's Pikachu in a pokeball long enough and BAM! they got their 'special' pikachu.

So... shinies are canon now? First the Feraligatr now shinies. You just keep letting dem newer gens leak in. I'll get to see myself a Magnezone and Gardevoir yet.
October 8th, 2014, 10:33 am
@ChaosSorceror_Davidicus: While the comic itself adheres to First Gen rules, the other regions have their own ecological differences. So while a Gen 2 concept may not have been noticed in Generation 1 Kanto. Johto Still exists on that world.
October 8th, 2014, 4:29 pm
(Finally remembered my password...) @Feartheswans: Right, I understand that. I'm talking about the comic itself. I remember waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, it was said that the comic would focus only on Gen 1, despite the appearance of a Gen 2 starter. Yet here we are, declaring another part of later-gen "tech," as canon for this "universe." So I wonder if there will be more of this.

That... and I was just saying it for fun. I know it is hard to read tone. Kekek.

George's Wall "Is it nice living by the ocean? Do you get many visitors up here? Have you been to Johto, what's it like there? Would you go back?

What did you mean trying to get you arrested? Are you a wanted(?) man? Are you a criminal?

Are you rich? Why's your hair so long? How did you get so tall? Why do you look so tired? Do you sleep?"

And that's my guess. Pretty sure most of it is right. Cause I'm psychic. *ego boost +5*

RESEARCH Wonderful work as always, h0ly! It's not often that I see a webcomic get into the nitty gritty technical details, while still managing to be interesting (and amusing, even, given the context). Also, George is amazing and no one can tell me otherwise.

Pokemon Red and Green came out on February 27, 1996, well OVER a year before the Digimon toys on June 26, 1997. Not even two minutes of searching will get you that data. So next time try doing some research before you tell someone they deserve to die. Or, better yet, don't tell ANYONE they deserve to die, because that's a pretty spectacular dick move, whether or not you meant it seriously. :\ But, yes, both Pokemon and Digimon are definitely amazing in their own ways - I'm sure just about everyone can agree with that.
Syntras (Guest)
October 8th, 2014, 8:06 am
Sorry for the misconception. @SirLogical:
You misunderstand. I don't care hat came first. For me, I had found Digimon first, and heard from others that it was the first. I'm not afraid of being wrong. What upset me was the way he mocked Digimon, as if it were little more than a joke, a poor imitation of Pokemon. That ticked me off. I understand I came on too strong, and for that I apologize. I just had a big fight with my father over something which I won't mention so as to not trouble you, and I was in a bad frame of mind. I take back what I said in that first comment, and pray your forgiveness.
October 8th, 2014, 8:20 am
More research... @SirLogical: I think the misunderstanding here is also that Red & Green (1996) was never released in Europe or the US.

However, anyone searching for Red & Blue (1998) may have believed that Digimon came first. Yes, it's still a mistake, but an honest one.

Also, it doesn't matter who released first anyway as BOTH games would have been in development at about the same time. Arguably the physical "Digital Monsters" virtual pet would have gone through more stringent safety testing than Pokémon & therefore could have started development first. Who knows.

Personally for me, both Digimon and Pokémon are great properties... the main problem Digimon had is that I believe 4Kids got the property rights and have consistently RUINED the show through silly dubbing & editing. Hence why Digimon has been on Japanese TV screen every year, but dissapeared from the US/UK for nearly a decade.
SirLogical (Guest)
October 8th, 2014, 8:42 am

Yeah, praising one show by way of mocking another isn't really the best way to go about things, either; didn't say they weren't wrong for that. :) Besides, from what I can gather (as I've admittedly only seen a little of Digimon, though I've liked what I HAVE seen of it), Digimon and Pokemon are pretty far off from each other in story AND the way those stories are handled, so...yeah, comparing them is pretty silly, anyway. And with that in mind, it's totally understandable why one might get irritable over having either franchise portrayed as a poor imitation of the other - especially since they both have such huge nostalgic value.

So, really, I get where you're coming from - no worries there. It was just your strong wording that rubbed me the wrong way, even though it wasn't directed at me specifically, but you understand that fault and can own up to it - that's far better than can be said of a lot of people, and I definitely respect that. :) Meanwhile, I sincerely hope your personal issues are resolved as positively as possible, and that the rest of your day goes much better.
Syntras (Guest)
October 8th, 2014, 8:53 am
Thank you. @SirLogical:
I must admit, you have impressed me. You are logical, like myself. I think the only reason they are compared is the Digi/Pokemon part. Anyways, I talked over with my father, and we've reached a, well... A compromise, I guess. I'm 19, so I moved out. We've been fighting a lot since then, so...
SirLogical (Guest)
October 8th, 2014, 9:31 am
@Syntras: Hence why I use the name. ;) Also, pretty neat to see you came to a similar conclusion I did, about their respective names - I was actually going to mention it in my prior response, but didn't feel it fit in well enough. I expect the inclusion of creatures which change form is also a factor in the comparison, but once again, spending two minutes to read about how they change form makes the differences pretty obvious. I guess most people just don't like reading...? :(

I don't want to butt in on your familial scuffles, given that I am but an internet stranger to you, so I'm not going to try giving advice unless you specifically want and ask for it. All I'll say is that I greatly empathize with you, and wish you the best of luck.

@Dante_Solablood: I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's a big factor in the debate. And it's a lot harder to find development information from that long ago. Emailing either company might get an answer - eventually, with any luck. But somehow I doubt it. xD

I'm seeing various dubbing companies responsible for Digimon (Saban Entertainment, Studiopolis, Sensation Animation, and now Saban Brands), whereas 4kids was responsible for dubbing Pokemon up until Pokemon US took over. 4kids did pretty all right with Pokemon when they had it, far as I remember, so Digimon definitely got the shorter end of the stick as far as dubbing goes, which is a real shame.

(And to h0ly, apologies for conversing in the comments! I just never know when to shut my mouth. Which is...probably the main reason why George is so amazing to me. XD)
October 8th, 2014, 9:41 am
@SirLogical: Ah, my bad, I got myself confused with Yu-Gi-Oh which was pretty badly served by 4Kids... but that's a different topic altogether. :3
Syntras (Guest)
October 8th, 2014, 9:10 pm
Thank you. @SirLogical:
4Kids did do a good job on the Pokemon franchise, I admit, despite their many other failures which I shall leave unnamed... As for Digimon, you're right again. I can't help but wonder, if it had worked out better, do you think they might have not butchered the franchise?
Also, thanks for giving a damn about my personal life, and if you have any advice to help, I'd be glad to hear it. I'm actually a clinical sociopath, diagnosed. I have trouble with emotions, to put it lightly, which makes it hard to get along with people. Look it up online if you want the full details.
SirLogical (Guest)
October 9th, 2014, 8:39 am
@Syntras: Where 4Kids is concerned, I'm only aware of Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, and Mew Mew Power as their biggest failures (the last one because I...actually really like the original Japanese show. XD I was PRETTY furious about them dubbing it so poorly). Now I'm kind of wondering just how many shows they've managed to ruin without my being aware of it - I'll have to look it up now, because it's...somehow terrifying not knowing. o_o Anyway, I think the only way Digimon could have avoided butchering in the west would have been if a trustworthy dubbing company had gotten the rights to it; it's just that there just don't seem to be many dubbing companies that give a damn about quality while also staying as true to the original as possible. That's a more recent trend, anyway, far as I'm aware. Even Funimation kinda sucked back in the earlier days of dubbing. :\ One thing I'm definitely sure of, though, is that Digimon would be far more popular than it is now if it HAD gotten the dub it deserves - as Dante_Solablood mentioned, it's still going strong in Japan, so it's clear that it can sustain itself just fine with proper management.

If it's not too much trouble for you, would you mind emailing me? ( I would rather discuss advice and such in a private vein - as much as I like helping people, it's far too impersonal discussing such things in comments, and...also rather impolite to the artist. ^^;
