"I had to take extra care to make sure that those last two panels didn't look like sex."

June 22nd, 2015, 4:48 pm
@Z2: You're right it still looks like sex. Especially with the angle the warturtle is at and the blush on his face. It also makes it look like Dragon thing is a boy, and warturtle is a girl.

@GreyWolf: Really? I just thought DT was a cowgirl.
June 28th, 2015, 2:14 pm
@GreyWolf: Cowgirl position, there now DT's gender doesn't have to change and you can still think dirty thoughts

Let's hope Atty gets crushed. Maybe then he'll stop being so lazy and actually train his pokémon
June 22nd, 2015, 5:07 pm
Yep. Still looks like sex here.

I love how Dragonthing doesn't holding anything against Kahn's Wartortle despite the beating she got when they first battled. Shows the whole no bad Pokemon just bad people thing.
June 22nd, 2015, 5:18 pm
awwww DT and Turtle are having so much fun, I see another ship coming :3

I may be mistaken, but isn't around Vermillion/SS Anne the time where your Charmeleon evolves into a Charizard? Or was I just overgrinding? If this is incorporated during their battle, I would love to see the face of George when he returns with a Dragon!

Nevertheless, nice work so far, keep it up!
June 22nd, 2015, 6:05 pm
@Asce: I think you're overgrinding. While Dragonthing has gotten strong, I don't think it has won that many battles. It lost the last one, and if you want to sort of count when Atty broke into that guys house to steal that move, it didn't end in a battle, but an 'Escape'.

Ambiguous Level @EPISCESGIRL85:
Actually, when you get down it, the level of Dragonthing could be... well, anywhere below the Charizard evolution, at this point. Aside from the unusual and harsh conditions DT is often put through, and conditions that frankly defy the possibilities of the games (if generally remain within them except where story appropriate), DT, Rat, and even Fish are all a bit muddy on what their levels could be. There's good reason why people were speculating on whether H0ly would elect to have Fish evolve 'early' in the previous chapter, due to all the BS it's been through for a Magikarp.

But aside from that, you're forgetting certain events. Atty has, in fact, put DT - and Rat, too - through some rather harsh training. Grinding, in fact. Easy to forget, because it's been a long time.

For one, there's chapter 3. Now, from a pure experience standpoint, DT gets her feet wet here, KOing all three pokemon in Kahn's team. That he finds out afterward that they were already beat up and low on health at that point is irrelevant, if you're talking strictly by game rules - DT gets full XP value for all three. Then there's the matter of their encounter with the Masked Man and his Feraligator. This is where DT's experience starts to get muddy... Obviously battling the Feraligator was futile. They lost... but DT didn't faint either. But strictly speaking, that's also not possible in the game. You can't just walk out of a trainer battle, even if you feign death. Here we have to begin to consider a different factor entirely: Real World Experience (RWE from here on for simplicity).

Logically, for the conveyence of comic story, we can't show every little fight - or partake in every possible one, as we see with Atty fleeing random idiots on the SS Anne - without pointlessly drawing out the comic to absurd lengths. So by strict game rules, they're not gaining enough experience. But in real life, you learn from what you live through. H0ly seems to be playing it that their their strength and experience is based on both their actual victories, and in the real experience they take in living in, exploring, and even getting beaten in this world. This is fair and reasonable to do, both for the convenience of keeping the plot moving instead of being mired in strict rules of training in the game, and for a sort of applied realist reasoning. Even Ash and friends weren't forced to spend half of every episode of the cartoon grinding.

...and let's face it, that'd hardly be entertaining.

So presumably, DT learned from this fight, and may have grown stronger for the exertion in the end in that 'that which doesn't kill you' kind of way.

But if you want more example of strict adherence to the game's limitations, H0ly DOES play to that consideration to some degree. In chapter 4, it's revealed that Atty has begun letting DT roam freely and train on it's own, effectively auto-grinding for XP. So she was grinding in the forest up they got chased by the insects, and she set the initial victim on fire. Some would argue that she aught to have right to a chunk of the XP from the rest and not just the first - since one could argue this was a tactical victory - but unfortunately, George shoots that theory down when they return to the destroyed forest in chapter 6, in a confusing suggestion that DT is getting experience purely by traditional rules even though other aspects of the comic later suggest this isn't strictly true. (I could be wrong, but the impression is given, and we technically haven't seen enough fighting to justify DT's strength. Then gain, she can fight without commands, so maybe she's just the Chosen One. In which case, she needs to be very cautious of Tiny Nets.)

After their encounter with Stein, Atty then set out to grind again just out side the forest... and again within the forest, after invading an investigation that was passing through. Much to the dismay of a great deal of Pidgeys. And clear through the night until the next morning.

Hmmm... Rat was knocked into the stratosphere by Bide... but it's not clear if it actually fainted. I wonder if it shared XP for that Onyx?

Then we have, again, an ambiguous amount of training and the smackdown of random trainers as they travel to Pewter... ...also, the exaggeration of the faint-on-defeat trope. Pretty sure the NPCs didn't technically faint when beaten, since they'd still talk, but still hillarious! ...why didn't it happen to Kahn, though? Atty's at LEAST as stubborn as him.

...I digress though. DT is then also demonstrated playing flamethrower in Mt. Moon, pretty literally burning dozens of Zubats out of the air. Rat is seen grinding here as well. During the fight with the Hiker, Fish is released, and isn't returned. In a manner of speaking, though it's not specifically being used to fight, it in theory means it's sharing experience gained from that point on. ...the ... uh... the Fishsplosion at the Moonstone aside.

...and more bending of game rules by joining Rocket.

Rat, DT, and Fish are released for more training at the bridge to defeat trainers on the way to the lighthouse. Knowing the pattern by now, probably some free-range grinding when not beating random bypassers. DT may not have been fainted during the fight with the Golduck, since it was still trying to finish her off when the oddish stole the show.

Since we don't have any way of knowing what level they ACTUALLY are at this point in the story (the smoking scientist mentions his Magnemite was level 10, but we're otherwise not really given numbers that I recall), it's really hard to gauge the experience level of the gang right now, even if you fully disregard the possibility of the use of 'RWE' for comic story purposes. They actually could have quite a lot of XP at this point, and even DT could be on the verge of becoming a Charizard. Considering Atty's party has never really consisted of more than four Pokemon at a time, and most players would have diversified their party more by this time, this means DT in particular has been the focus of a lot of focused leveling. They may actually be pretty formidable.

Oh It's definitely sex. Chartles babies? Squirmander babies? How would the typing even work?
June 22nd, 2015, 7:09 pm
@Andreasfr: Actually, I looked it up and Charmeleon and Wartortle share an egg group. So they actually CAN breed with each other, but since DT is the female they would have only little Charmanders.

Oh! @PJSam: ... I should have remembered that..
Broktus (Guest)

@PJSam: You are absolutely correct, great job and thank you for actually doing your research instead of just making up random crap like Andreasfr.

@Asce (Guest): Yes, you were over-grinding. I pretty much only used my Squirtle and I still had to do some extra training to evolve it to Blastoise for my battle with Surge. To be fair I was like eight and terrible at Pokemon, but even so.

Different topic- Venus is blatantly standing on Kahn's shoulder, and while it may just be Venus being friendly with the trainer that actually likes it, it makes me wonder if Atty was actually given ownership of Venus like an in game gift Pokemon. Kahn left Venus's Pokeball on the Nugget Bridge and practically forced Atty to steal it, and while it was Kahn's idea it is still technically stealing and as such Venus may still officially be Kahn's Pokemon. It may seem Farfetch'd but it's a possibility that could really screw up Atty's day (and make ours).

Wow @Broktus: Well first of all fuck you. Second. I only forgot that they share an egg group, I know perfectly well species don't mix like that. Third. Fuck you again. Fourth. Trying to be funny isn't a bad thing. Fifth because why not. Fuck you thrice.
June 22nd, 2015, 9:09 pm
@Andreasfr: If I remember my pokemon biology right, the result is a charmander, or was it charmander or squirtle?
Alphabet Soup (Guest)

@Guest: The babies are always the species of the mother, or the non-ditto parent. So they would all be Charmanders.
Random (Guest)
June 23rd, 2015, 8:01 am
@Andreasfr: They are in the same egg group, so if the Wartortle is male, the children would be little Charmanders.

What are you talking about? Breeding wasn't introduced till Generation 2. Therefore it is impossible for sex to occur.

Everybody knows Fearows deliver baby Pokemon to the doorstep.

@OddOneOut: Remember the Sweet Scent-scene in Viriridian forest? And the Bibarel-drawing on the letter that Atty picked up?

Dang them claws... I've never really taken into huge consideration the enormous claws that DT has. I mean, dang. Them claws.

ah, old friends meeting up after a long time. The monsters don't know their humans don't like each other. They just go 'hay, it's my buddy' and start playing.

Bottom left panel is fine but it definitely still looks like sex on the last one.

Still kinda looks like sex. At least foreplay.
Paradox (Guest)
June 23rd, 2015, 3:26 pm
To be fair, the only reason it looks like sex is because it's a still image, so our brains are forced to fill in the gaps

If this were animated, it would be obvious that they're just playing
June 23rd, 2015, 6:14 pm
I'm all starry eyed over this encounter, so looking forward to more! Maybe Atty might think to try using an electric type...or ya know, any other pokemon besides Dragonthing. Don't pull an Ash like every episode boy!!

It looks like Dragonthing is giving Merric a lil kiss at the bottom, very adorable. But what's even more interesting is when not battling they just enjoy each others company and play. They have no reason to battle yet. It's Atty that is starting stuff.
