LAWL CHILD LABOR LAWS

I don't know why, but for some reason, I'm laughing WAY too hard at how blase Luke is about his work.

Wait, there're decent people in this world? Who can speak sensible stuff about important topics like child labour?

Ima give Luke some credit, at least he's being really nice about it. Chances are, he probably doesn't get many polite challenge requests like that.
I'm also going to give Atty some credit here too for being so polite himself.
Maybe George did good by stealing him that ticket, so I'm not going to jinx it by hoping anything.

@grammar nazi: It may be incorrect where you're at, but in the UK that's a normal way to phrase it (It comes so naturally to me I didn't even know that it wouldn't be phrased like that elsewhere, I had to ask a friend).

@H0lyhandgrenade: Personally, I'd say "I'll try to make it quick," "I'll try and make it quick," or "I'll try making it quick."

I've never heard "I'll try make it quick," unless someone is slurring the words together.

@Takeshre: The "try (bare infinitive)" construction is normal (albeit probably considered colloquial) in some dialects, including the one spoken where H0ly lives (somewhere in Lancashire, England). It's unusual-sounding to most speakers of American dialects, but I've encountered the construction a few times from English-speakers elsewhere (not just England).

guess being a normal trainer is no job... so there are child labour laws but they don't apply to the children who get sent on their pokemon journeys?

If Mokepon is going to follow the formula of the show, where the main guy is followed by a male and a female, I'd love to see Luke as the sane guy who follows Atticus around and is just as perturbed by the insanity of the world as he is, so it doesn't come off like he's the only sane person in the entire world.

This has got to be one of the first (if not THE first) mentions of child labor laws in a Pokemon universe I've ever seen...at least from someone other than myself!

I love the juxtaposition of sensible laws like they would have in the real world. And bat shit insane laws that run off of video game logic.

Makes Sense If you start your pokemon journey at age 10, then he became a gym leader in two years. Though I wonder if a gym leader needs to beat the elite four or just be able to beat the other gyms...
We really don't know what the requirements are.

@Guest: I don't think either of those things are a rule for gym leaders. I imagine the pokemon league just hires people like any job would.

The entire point of the elite 4 in the games is that they are the strongest trainers in the region. It wouldn't make sense for every gym leader to have beaten them.

In the anime the gym leaders seem to have free reign to hand their gym over to anyone they want (usually family). It appears the pokemon league doesn't care so long as they don't get complaints. They can also shut their gym down at will and it is surprisingly common for them to hand out badges for reasons other than winning a gym battle.

Huh, what do you know. A second nice person who's sane and not evil. Don't screw this up, Atty. You don't want to make any new enemies atm.

Lol, child labor laws in the Pokemon world. Wouldn't that be nice. Somehow I get the feeling that Luke is either a strict play-by-the-rules type of person or then he's just a Gym Leader for the money, because usually everyone loves to have a battle right away when asked unless they're busy or in Artemis's case, having a bad day and generally not a very nice person to begin with.

About the Gym Leader thing, it's true that some Gym Leaders inherit their title from their relatives, but I'm pretty sure most of them are chosen for the job by the Pokemon League. Some Gym Leaders are even self-appointed at first and then made official by the Pokemon League if they're deemed skilled enough for the job. I think skill as a Trainer is the most important quality the Pokemon League is looking for in their Gym Leaders, so it's a pretty safe guess that Luke is a skilled Trainer no matter how he got his title.
